Mystery of two firms with almost similar name

There were further revelations of the disorder at the Company Registrar’s Office. For instance, the committee members raised some inconsistencies such as different dates in which the Beijing based company was registered and incorporated.

Ichung’wah and Linturi pointed out the Certificate of Compliance says the CRBC International was incorporated in Kenya on December 28, 1984 while the documents Gachega had presented show that it was done on December 12, 1984.

“How is it that you were able to give out a Registration Certificate 16 days before CRBC even deposited their Articles of Association with you?” posed Ichung’wah.

“Mr Chairman, I would like the Registrar-General to tell us, what was the rush that required someone in her office to give out this Compliance Certificate on a public holiday when all public employees and every Kenyans should have been at home or at the Stadium celebrating Jamhuri Day?” Linturi pointed out.

But the committee was left even more puzzled when they learned that the CRBC officials had picked up their Incorporation Certificate three years later.

The Registrar-General also denied media reports that a registration file belonging to CRBC International had gone been missing at Sheria House; she explained that the file might have been in use by another client conducting a name search or had been called for action by a senior officer.

The committee also learned that the CRBC International through a prominent Nairobi law firm had written to Gachega seeking clarification on media reports claiming a company with a name similar to theirs was registered and is operating in Kenya.

Earlier, Auditor General Edward Ouko told the House team that a comprehensive report of the now controversial multi-billion shilling Standard Gauge Railway tender will be ready in mid-April.

Ouko explained that he needed time to get information on the deal from his Chinese counterparts. The Mombasa-Nairobi SGR line is being done as government to government project through a funding facility provided by the China Exim Bank.

“As an auditor and as someone who should be adding some added value to your investigation, I feel there is a very important international aspect which must be brought in, and that is where I am furthering (the scope of the probe) to see where I can communicate, connect and network through very specific questions but remember we are working on the goodwill of people on the other side,” the Auditor-General explained.

Ouko admitted that his office was being held back by the challenge of communication barrier.
