Poll chaos broke out as Kibaki took oath – witness

The witness also said that she saw five bodies belonging to members of the Kalenjin community and that she recognised one of the bodies as that of a famous athlete.

However, when she was put to task over the identity of this athlete, the witness said that she did not know who the witness was before later recanting her statement.

“Am I correct that one of the bodies you recognised was that of a famous athlete?” queried Alagendra.

“Yes,” she responded.

“Do you recall his name?” asked Ruto’s counsel.

“No,” she responded.

“Could it be Lucas Sang?” added Alagendra.

“No,” answered the witness.

“Have you ever heard of anybody named Lucas Sang?” posed the defence lawyer.

“No,” maintained the witness.

“There was a famous athlete that was killed and his name was Lucas Sang. Do you have knowledge about that?” clarified Alagendra.

“Yes,” said the witness.

“So you have knowledge that Lucas Sang was killed?” added the lawyer.

“Yes,” responded the witness.

Sang’s death is said to have inflamed tension in the area to an extent that another athlete is alleged to have said “for one Lucas, we want to kill a dozen people.”

The witness however distanced herself from that statement saying she did not recall hearing anything like that at the height of the violence.

The then OCS for Langas, a man only identified as Mwangi, is also said to have killed about 20 youths belonging to the Kalenjin and Luo communities but the witness said that she had not heard of these claims.

She also said that she did not understand why people were being beheaded, before later saying that it could have been to instil fear.

The defence counsel also put it to her that Mungiki might have been involved in the battle due to the acts of beheading but the witness said she had never had an encounter with the Mungiki and would not be in a position to respond.

Cross-examination of the witness continues on Wednesday.
