Governors, Senators strike truce on County Boards

Elgeyo-Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen said it was critical that the leaders at the county are not seen to be at loggerheads.

“Those who are saying that this was meant to push apart need to realize that this Bill was only meant to bring us even closer.”

“What we are trying to avoid is a situation where a Senator like myself gives the perception that I am trying to kill devolution just because we don’t agree with how the governors are implementing the county development strategy,” he said.

The Bill that has since been introduced in the Senate creates a County Development Board, which will be chaired by the Senators and comprises County Woman Representatives, elected MPs in the constituencies within the county; the Speaker of the County Assembly; the Majority and Minority Leaders in the County Assembly; the chairperson of the County Public Service Board, the chairmen of the County Assembly Committees in charge of Planning, Finance, and Budget.

The representative of the national government in charge of planning will also sit on the Board.

The Governor will sit as the Secretary of the Development Board, while the Deputy Governor will just be one of the members.
