NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 7 – Yet another road accident has claimed six lives and left 26 other people seriously wounded, this time on the Nakuru-Kericho highway.

The accident occurred between a bus and a station wagon at Chepsii, according to the Kenya Red Cross.

Those injured were taken to the Kericho District Hospital for medical care.

Last Thursday, a bus owned by the City to City bus bound for Homa Bay veered of the road and rolled down a valley at Ntulele on the Mai Mahiu-Narok road.

Steve Mutia the driver surrendered himself, in the company of his wife, to the police at the National Traffic Headquarters in Nairobi on Tuesday following a four-day manhunt.

He was later charged with 40 counts of causing death with reckless driving.

He was also charged for driving an unroadworthy vehicle, driving without an inspection sticker and driving without a road service license before a Narok court.

Mutia however pleaded not guilty to the charges arguing that it was the bus company, City to City which should be held accountable for the overloaded bus and the resultant deaths.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) on Friday last week gave Traffic Commandant Samuel Kimaru 30 days to come up with a comprehensive plan to reduce road carnage in the country following Narok accident.

LSK Chairman Eric Mutua in his letter accused Kimaru of failing to perform his duties effectively and stated that if he fails to come up with a workable plan, they will institute proceedings to remove him from office.
