NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 16 – The Chief Campaigner of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was on Tuesday questioned by police over allegations of a plot to destabilize the government of President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Owalo presented himself to the CID headquarters where he was questioned but did not record a statement because no formal summonses were issued to him.

“I reported to the CID as a matter of courtesy,” Owalo said in a post on his Facebook page. “I declined to respond to the allegations unless and until I receive official written summons.”

He arrived at the CID headquarters at 4 pm and left shortly afterwards in the company of his lawyer. “The allegations basically revolved around schemes to destabilize the Kenyan government.”

Earlier, after receiving a call from a detective at the CID headquarters, Owalo told Capital FM News that “this is political intimidation.”

“All this is just meant to harass and intimidate me so as to silence me politically,” he said.

On his Facebook page, Owalo stated: “This is cheap propaganda being peddled by the Jubilee Government through the security and intelligence apparatus and their agents to divert the attention of Kenyans from the myriad challenges it is facing, including but not limited to the on-going teachers’ strike and complicity of Jubilee and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in the Makueni by-election nomination fiasco.”

He said he decided to inform the public because he was unsure of the motive the CID has in summoning him to its headquarters.

“I have found it imperative to alert the Kenyan public; based on past incidences in Kenya in which political figures have mysteriously disappeared in related circumstances. My considered opinion is that this is yet another act of political intimidation aimed at silencing divergent political views, which in my considered opinion is unacceptable in the current political dispensation,” he explained.

On Thursday, the Jackal News website alleged that Owalo together with several others were working to destabilise President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government.

“The report indicates that Owalo is actively involved in the recruitment of students from Kenyatta, Nairobi and Maseno universities as well all as the youth to hold a massive demonstration against the government,” the blog stated.

Kenyatta’s election was challenged by Odinga’s CORD in the Supreme of Court Kenya which later ruled that Kenyatta was duly elected in the March 4 General Election.
