He added that the commission has attempted to mitigate the chances of voter details coming up missing from the register and was categorical that polling clerks will not deviate from using the EVID. “Nobody can stop the use of those devices unless he receives authority from very high, let’s say the returning officer.”
As for the transmission of results, Mahiri-Zaja said their technical team is working with Safaricom to ensure even that aspect goes smoothly. “It came out in the media about the RTS (Result Transmission System) that Safaricom withdrew but we have had consultations with Safaricom.”
There are 298,474 voters registered in Makueni County, 914 polling streams and there will be two security agents deployed to each of them to ensure that the tumultuous proceedings that have so far preceded the by-election do not to carry over to the voting day itself.
“The news and the cases that have emerged, it’s going to be a tight race also and of course bringing in the same old fight of Jubilee, CORD but we are hoping that we will have a successful by-election,” Mahiri-Zaja said.
