Inspector General of Police David Kimaiyo said the money will be spent to purchase vehicles for police officers and pay their salaries for the next two years.
“We are asking for adequate provisions and we may need more than Sh150 billion just for the beginning and then the process will be able to take its natural cause,” he said.
The Inspector General was speaking during the launch of the Nairobi Region annual Crime Observatory Report where he stated that the funds will be spent in the coming years to sustain the war against crime.
“In this election, a lot of money was used just for two months. We are now talking about the entire year and also the year that follows and this is not too much for us to ask,” he stated.
Kimaiyo said the Police Service is understaffed hence the need to employ more police officers to increase their presence in all parts of the country.
“The issue of physical presence of police is very important,” he stated.
If the Treasury agrees to the request, it would be the biggest allocation to the police in Kenya’s history.
Last year, Finance Minister Njeru Githae allocated Sh65 billion to the Internal Security Ministry in which the police was a department.
Unlike other police chiefs before him, Kimaiyo presides over an independent office, mandated by law to prepare a budget for the National Police Service and account for the use of funds.
In the past, the commissioner of police was not an independent office holder and thus the Internal Security Permanent Secretary was accountable for funds allocated to the police.
In total, the national security sector budget rose to Sh83.5 billion, from Sh78 billion in the 2011/2012 financial year.
