NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 22 – Prime Minister Raila Odinga has urged Governors-elect under the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) umbrella to protect the gains the country had realized to fully operationalise the devolved structures of administration.

Speaking at a Nairobi hotel, Odinga urged all leaders to strengthen their counties to ensure reforms were not reversed.

“You must remain firm and pull in the same direction across the political divide without compromising the ideals of the coalition in making the devolved systems functional,” he called.

Odinga urged the Governors-elect to be aware of forces keen on sustaining the status quo who may slow the pace of development.

“They are relentless and will stop at nothing to ensure that the devolved Government was weakened and subservient to the national Government,” Odinga reiterated.

He said the passing of the National Government Coordination Act posed a challenge to the county system arguing that the new legislation was enacted in bad faith to undermine the devolved system.

At least ten Governors elect and their deputies including Nairobi’s Evans Kidero attended the function. Also present were Senators-elect James Orengo, Anyang Nyongo, Johnston Muthama and several Members of the National Assembly.
