OTHAYA, Kenya, Feb 9 – President Mwai Kibaki has urged Othaya residents to remain united and focused on development.

Addressing a leaders’ meeting at Othaya CDF Hall in Othaya town, President Kibaki emphasized that the public should not allow the development momentum attained to be slowed down by political rivalry.

“We have achieved significant progress because of our unity. Let us not allow our focus to be distracted by political rivalry and the coming elections at the expense of development,” President Kibaki said.

Saying good leaders are known for their development records, the Head of State said the public should vote for people who will ensure the country does not lag behind in development.

President Kibaki thanked the Othaya residents for their support, saying it has enabled him to serve effectively not only the constituency but the whole country.

Responding to the leaders’ development requests made through a memorandum read by Othaya Development Association Chairman, Gichuki Mugambi, the president assured that their needs would be addressed.

On security in the constituency, President Kibaki said Munyange Police Post will be upgraded into a police station and provided with a police vehicle, adding that Othaya court will be built.

He said the Government will also move to improve the provision of health services by upgrading Gichiche and Witima health centres to sub-district hospitals.

“Dispensaries will also be equipped with enough medicine to ensure wananchi receive adequate health services,” President Kibaki said.

The president added that Sh200 million will be provided to develop Othaya Medical Training Centre, which will be gazetted.

Noting that the road network in the constituency has been improved, the President said the remaining roads will also be rehabilitated.

President Kibaki also reassured that the Ministry of Cooperative development will address the challenges facing farmers in the area
including the construction of a cooling plant for the dairy sector and purchase of a roasting machine for the coffee sector.

Speaking during the meeting, the leaders thanked President Kibaki for his sterling leadership that has taken Othaya and the whole country, in general, to great heights of development.

Othaya Development Association Chairman Gichuki Mugambi noted that through the President’s wise counsel, leadership and efforts, many projects have been implemented to improve the lives of residents.

Mugambi observed that Othaya is one of the constituencies with the lowest poverty levels in the country.

On his part, Othaya Constituency Development Fund (CDF) Chairman, Karanja Mwangi, outlined the projects that have been implemented for the benefit of wananchi in the constituency and thanked President Kibaki for giving him the responsibility to spearhead the CDF team.

Mwangi, however, cautioned the youth against consumption of illicit brews, saying the vice was counter-productive and would drag the constituency behind.

On the coming elections, the CDF chairman appealed to Othaya residents to come out in large numbers and vote for their leaders peacefully on the election day.
