NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 9 – The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) on Saturday intensified its campaigns at the Coast with rallies in Lamu County.

Led by Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, the team told Lamu residents not to gamble with their votes and elect leaders who are committed to the full implementation of the new constitution and the fight against negative ethnicity.

Odinga and Musyoka asked Kenyans to shun tribalism and embrace respect and tolerance in order to realise peace and national cohesion for the sake of stability and development of the country.

The PM says that his government will give emphasis to solving the problem of historical land injustices in the region as well as the development of education, improvement of infrastructure and eradication of poverty.

Addressing a rally in Lamu Township, the leaders said CORD will strive to fight negative ethnicity for the sake of peace and unity of Kenyans irrespective of tribe and political affiliations.

The leaders said if the coalition forms the next government, it will fully exploit the available natural resources including establishment of a special economic zone in Lamu to create wealth and improve the country’s economy.

Odinga and Musyoka pledged to ensure that CORD will improve living standards of women and youths by giving them grants to initiate income generating activities.

“Programmes such as Kazi Kwa Vijana could not benefit the youth because they did not have management skills and this is why CORD will embark on training of the youth before giving them such grants,” said the PM.

The leaders blamed entrenched tribalism to bad leadership that condoned the vice since independence and called on Kenyans to come out forcefully and say no to politics of tribalism.

“I want you to vote for leaders who are committed to uniting all the Kenyan communities. Do not be bribed to vote for certain individuals. If somebody gives you money, take it and even ask for more. But at the end of the day vote for the right leadership that will give lasting solutions to problems facing our nation,” advised Musyoka.

The PM once again assured that his government will fully implement the new constitution to guarantee every Kenyan their fundamental rights.

He said that his government, if elected, will ensure the development of education including provision of 1,000 scholarships as one way of improving the academic standards among Kenyans, adding that it is only through the development of education that the many challenges facing the country can be solved.

Cabinet ministers James Orengo (Lands) and Fred Gumo (Regional Development) and former Kangundo MP Johnson Muthama urged Kenyans to vote for the CORD coalition if the many challenges facing the country have to be solved.
