NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 7 – The Jubilee Alliance plans to hold a major rally at Uhuru Park on Saturday ahead of joint nominations scheduled for next Thursday.

In a statement sent to newsrooms on Monday, the coalition said it would formally launch its poll bid and unveil Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta as its presidential candidate with William Ruto as his running mate.

The grouping will also make public its joint secretariat during the rally.

“The Saturday event comes at a critical time when members of the coalition partners are preparing for joint nominations and sets the stage for the primaries scheduled for January 17, 2013,” said the statement.

Kenyatta, in the meantime, spent Monday on the campaign trail selling his bid in various parts of Kisii and Nyamira Counties.

“The reform process does not belong to an individual, but to the 40 million Kenyans. And this process must improve the livelihoods of all Kenyans,” he said.

The deputy premier held a meeting with youth leaders in Kisii town where he emphasised the need for a banana factory and working soapstone industry noting that they would best cater for the interests of the region.

Kenyatta later joined Ruto and others at Egutuki.

The duo was accompanied by Cabinet Ministers Sam Ongeri and MPs Wilfred Ombui, Walter Nyambati, Mohammed Hussein, Danson Mungatana, Aden Duale and Rachel Shebesh.

They entourage also toured Ogembo, Itumbi, Igare, Gesusu, Keroka, Nyansiongo, Chepilat and Manga areas.

“The March election is about issues and numbers. Jubilee is a national movement with leaders and supporters from all parts of Kenya. It will, therefore, form a national and inclusive government,” said Ruto.

He further pledged that the Jubilee Alliance would set up a special fund for youth and women to draw free-interest loans that would not require title deeds and logbooks.

Ongeri expressed confidence that their coalition will capture the presidency, promising Kenyans in the region that their interests would be safeguarded.

“Voter numbers speak for themselves. Uhuru’s and Ruto’s strongholds add up to over six million votes. It is therefore clear where the people of Kisii should and will go,” he said.

Duale challenged their opponents to focus on issues of development saying a Jubilee win would ensure that Kenya prospers economically and socially.

“This is a message to our competitors… we are presenting a presidential and deputy presidential candidate who have a track record. Let them also show what their record is,” he urged.

The group also asked Kenyans to maintain peace before, during and after the elections saying Kenya was bigger than individuals.

“Politicians must never again be allowed to cause violence and then go to Nairobi to make deals over power. The election period will pass, but Kenya must remain,” noted Kenyatta.
