MOMBASA, Kenya, Jan 30 – The country’s efforts to implement a key Vision 2030 goal geared at unveiling the first fully-fledged university in the Coast Region has been attained.

This has been achieved following the culmination of the former Mombasa Polytechnic University College transition to a fully-fledged university.

The Mombasa-based university will offer a variety of degree and diploma programmes at its Mombasa town campus with complementary Diploma programmes also offered at its Lamu and Ukunda Satellite campuses.

President Mwai Kibaki who officially graced the occasion challenged institutions of higher and tertiary education to strive to produce the highest quality of graduates.

“We expect that the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM)will continue the drive towards providing relevant and innovative technology education and training. In addition, you must continuously benchmark with the best universities in your specialization,” President Kibaki said.

“The new Universities Act of 2012 marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of higher and tertiary education in our country. The Act has provided for a robust environment and equal playing field for the accreditation and quality assurance of university education in our country,” the Head of State said.

Alongside TUM, President Mwai Kibaki will also present a University Charter to the Pwani University College on Tuesday, making the new Pwani University the second fully fledged University in the coastal region.

On his part, Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat Director General Mugo disclosed that they are considering identifying TUM as a Marine Studies and Technology Centre of Specialisation following the university charter award.

With key Vision 2030 Flagship projects such as the Multi million dollars, Lamu Port – South Sudan – Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor now taking shape, Kibati said that both TUM and Pwani University will now be well positioned to cater for the emerging intellectual demands in the region and beyond.
