MOMBASA, Kenya, Dec 2 – Prime Minister Raila Odinga assured chiefs at a rally in Tononoka grounds on Sunday that they need not fear for their jobs should he be elected president on March 4, 2013.

“The other day we saw chiefs demonstrating. They have been misled into believing that should the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) win in the elections they will lose their jobs. I want to assure them that their jobs are safe.”

The Prime Minister had accused his detractors on Thursday of turning the chiefs against him.

Odinga also extended an olive branch to the outlawed Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) saying their grievances over historical injustices on matters land were genuine.

“Land is the basis for wealth creation. Land must be given to those who need it to create wealth. We don’t want to hear of land grabbing. We don’t want to see land evictions. We will as ODM resolve this issue.”

He condemned the force the police are using to quash the MRC and pledged to instead engage them in dialogue.

“A political problem demands a political resolution and so I have directed that discussions be held with the MRC.”

The MRC having threatened to disrupt the elections, the Premier encouraged them to register as voters and decried the low voter registration turn out at the Coast.

“Very few people have turned up to register at the coast. I want to see residents of the region turning up to register as voters.”

On the ODM party nominations, Odinga promised impartiality assuring they will be free and fair.

“Party nominations will be done democratically. They will be free and fair. I will not favour any aspirant over the other.”

Odinga’s political ally and Lands Minister James Orengo and his brother Oburu Odinga are both vying for the Siaya county senatorship.

The PM sought to highlight what he would do for the country should he be elected President in 2013 saying the road development witnessed in the last five years should be credited to him.

“Elect me as president and Thika Road will be but a drop in the ocean.”
