UDF eager to meet registrar over pact dispute

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 29 – The United Democratic Forum (UDF) says it is ready and eager to meet the Registrar of Political Parties together with The National Alliance (TNA) and United Republican Party (URP) over a disputed election pact signed on December 4.

The three political parties have been summoned to appear before the registrar on Monday, after UDF accused its former coalition partners TNA and URP of breaching the agreement.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday, UDF Secretary-General Dan Ameyo said the meeting is not aimed at pushing to go back to the Jubilee alliance, but to ensure leaders follow the law especially in this election period.

“As a party we have made a complaint to the Registrar of Political Parties and according to the law, it is the registrar to respond to that complaint and curve the way forward. She has invited us together with our friends TNA and URP for a meeting next week,” Ameyo said.

On his part the party’s chairman Hassan Osman said UDF will hold its presidential nomination on January 4, 2013, adding that any interested candidate to challenge the party Leader Musalia Mudavadi should send the application before then.

“The preparation for the nomination of the party candidate is in full gear, and our aspirants are assured of free and fair exercise. The National Executive Committee has approved the convening of a National Delegates Conference to carry out the nomination,” Osman said.

Mudavadi went public early this month that he and TNA party leader Uhuru Kenyatta had signed a secret deal where Kenyatta, in the presence of URP leader William Ruto, had agreed to step down in the presidential race in favour of Mudavadi.

In the agreement, Ruto was to be Mudavadi’s running mate while Kenyatta was to be allocated the majority leader’s slot.

But Kenyatta and Ruto disowned Mudavadi insisting that he did not want to go through the democratic process of nominating a presidential candidate for the Jubilee coalition.

Meanwhile TNA chairman Johnson Sakaja has confirmed that the party will attend the Monday meeting but it will not interfere with the campaign programme of the party.

“We have been summoned by the registrar and we are law abiding citizens. But we would want everyone to know that we will not be disrupted by the side shows. We already have our presidential candidate and his running mate who have already been approved by the party delegates,” Sakaja told Capital FM News on Saturday.

All eyes will be on the outcome of the meeting to see if it will have any impact on the current political scene.
