Kibaki slaps curfew in Tana as Monday deaths hit 38

Local Member of Parliament Dhadho Godhana accused the government of not doing enough to protect people in the region.

Godhana said: “I have received information from the ground that the area is tense.”

“It is really bad, even police officers have been killed. And there are more people in hospital who are in critical condition. Something must be done; the government must be serious in handling this crisis.”

Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta also condemned the killings terming them as inexcusable and appealed to the communities to stop the killings.

“It’s saddening to see lives being lost, homes being burnt down and livelihoods compromised. As Police and the government continue taking action to contain and forestall further incidents, I appeal for calm in the area. Specifically I urge all communities within the Tana Delta to initiate Inter-Community Dialogue to promote peaceful co-existence,” said Kenyatta in a statement.

Kenyatta challenged elders and youth leaders in the communities to immediately commit to dialogue and reconciliation.
