Protesting Tour Drivers block Narok road

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 3 – Tour-bus drivers blocked the main road in Narok town on Friday morning, to protest over the dilapidated condition of the road leading to the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

They said the condition of the road was deplorable and was affecting travel by tourists into the park.

A contingent of police officers, who arrived at the scene pleaded with the drivers to unblock the road for more than an hour, before they relented.

The protesting drivers now want the Ministers for Tourism and Roads to rehabilitate the highway and enhance tourism in the region.

The distance between Narok Road and the Maasai Mara Game Reserve is 80 Kilometres.

The Mara, which is known for the annual wildebeest migration, is situated in the southwest of Kenya in the Rift Valley, bordering with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park.

Often described as the greatest of nature’s stages, the Maasai Mara, with its expansive dramatic skies, is the most popular of all Kenya’s game parks.

The landscape, which is mostly savanna, hosts approximately 22 families of lions and 3,000 elephants.

This park is also famous for herds of buffaloes, wildebeest and zebras that roam its plains.
