, NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 30 – More than 900 kilograms of bhang worth Sh9 million was on Thursday seized by Kenya Revenue Authority officers at the Tanzanian border.
The bhang packed in 31 sacks was being transported in a truck which had just crossed the border into Kenya when the officers intercepted it.
“The officers were on a routine inspection of the truck when they found the bhang concealed in one of the truck’s compartments,” KRA Spokesman Kennedy Onyonyi said.
Police in Namanga have launched a manhunt for the truck’s driver who fled when he was stopped at the border point roadblock.
Onyonyi said the truck driver run away when officers were conducting a search on the vehicle.
Following Thursday’s incident, officers at the border tightened security measures to curb incidents of trafficking bhang from Tanzania which is seen as the main source of the drug consumed locally.
An officer attached to the anti-narcotics unit said the bhang is usually transported to Nairobi before it is repackaged and taken to the port city of Mombasa.
