Kayole police gun down fellow officer

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 15 – A police officer was shot dead by his colleagues in Nairobi’s Kayole area on Sunday after he was mistaken for a gangster.

The officer was attached to an Administration Police Post within Kayole and was gunned down by officers pursuing a gang that had snatched money from a group of women, according to police.

Circumstances of the killing still remain unclear, but officers at the Kayole police station said he was gunned down while running away.

“There had been a robbery and as officers pursued the group, they confronted him and he also started to run away, that is when they shot at him only to realise later that he was their colleague,” a police officer there said.

Nairobi Provincial Police chief Antony Kibuchi has pledged a thorough investigation into the officers’ killing.

“What happened is unfortunate but a thorough investigation will be carried out,” he said.

Colleagues of the deceased officer described him as a man who had passion for his work.

“He did not have a bad character at all, he liked his job,” one officer said.

The killing is likely to cause friction in the relationship between regular and Administration Police outfits.
