Ex-Civil Service head Kareithi dies

The former Head of Civil Service died on Wednesday/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 28 – President Mwai Kibaki has sent a message of condolence to the family, relatives and friends of Geoffrey Kareithi, who was Kenya’s longest serving head of civil in the Kenyatta era.

President Kibaki recalled that the late Kareithi, who served as the country’s chief secretary between 1967 and 1979, presided effectively over the civil service during the most turbulent times in the country’s history.

Said the President: “Throughout this time, the late Kareithi maintained high professional standards in his work and demonstrated the qualities of a loyal and committed public servant.”

Kareithi died on Wednesday.

“Indeed, with the passing on of Kareithi, the cruel hand of death has robbed us of an illustrious and patriotic man who had enormous experience in matters of civil service,” President Kibaki said.

The Head of State observed that the late Kareithi holds the distinction of being the longest serving head of the civil service, a post he held for 12 years.

President Kibaki added that upon retiring from the civil service, the late Kareithi joined politics and continued to serve the country not only as an elected Member of Parliament for Gichugu constituency but also as an Assistant Minister.

“As a nation we mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant but remain proud of the contribution he made to our country,” President Kibaki said.
