Sudan’s Bashir in Heglig: AFP

, HEGLIG, Apr 23 – Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir arrived in the main oil region of Heglig on Monday, an AFP correspondent reported, after Sudan said its army had forced out South Sudanese troops.

Bashir landed at about 0950 GMT, dressed in a military uniform, the correspondent said.

It is the president’s first visit to the area since he said of South Sudanese forces on Friday: “We beat them”.

While Sudan proclaimed victory, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir had ordered earlier Friday the immediate withdrawal of his troops from the oil field seized on April 10.

The South said on Sunday that it had completed that pullout, easing a crisis which sparked intense international diplomacy to pull the two sides back from the brink of a wider war.

During the occupation, Bashir’s call for the overthrow of the “insect” government in the South sparked alarm in Washington.
