KANU finally lodges papers for registration

KANU ruled Kenya from independence until 2002/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr, 19 – Kenya’s independence party KANU on Thursday evening handed over its papers to the Registrar of Political Parties seeking for full listing ahead of the April 30 deadline.

Interim chairman Gideon Moi said that the party had been ready to present its papers well in advance were it not for wrangles in the party and got into the way of finalisation of some processes.

On Tuesday its officials obtained a certified copy of the party’s registration certificate to clear the way for its application after the certificate was said to have gone missing while in the custody of former chairman Uhuru Kenyatta.

“We were ready way before and as you know KANU is a national party. All we had to do was to activate out national networks from a united stand point; we got our act together as you saw on Saturday,” he said referring to the delegates conference held over the weekend.

Both Moi and Secretary General Nick Salat said little, only maintaining that they were elated to finally present the party’s registration credentials and that they were in the process of recruiting more members and mount a serious challenge for other parties in the next election.

Among the organizations that Kanu intends to work with is the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) which Salat Indicated would issue a statement on the intended support soon.

KANU has had a rough journey towards compliance with the new laws following three postponements of its National Delegates Conference that ought to have ratified the party’s new constitution.

On Saturday, a Special National Delegates Conference convened by Salat adopted a new constitution that aims at restructuring the management of the party and also elected former the then vice chairman Gideon Moi as the interim chairman.

The new KANU constitution curtails the powers of the chairman and transfers most of the mandate to the secretary general and the party organs.

The new chairman will not have the powers to order fresh elections or to appoint a committee to run the affairs of party organs where necessary.

In the new KANU constitution, the secretary general will head the secretariat; convene a NEC meeting which will have powers to order an NDC or National Governing Council (NGC).

A fortnight ago former president Daniel Moi who is also a former KANU chairman expressed fears that the party risked deregistration because of lacking a clear, sincere and responsible leadership.

According to Salat, Kenya’s oldest party has recruited the number of members required by law in 30 constituencies in which it has opened branches

Other parties that presented their papers for full registration on Thursday were KADDU Asili, Safina, the Social Democratic Party, and Chama Cha Mwananchi led by former Subukia MP Koigi Wa Wamwere.

As at the close of business on Thursday, the registrar confirmed six parties had been fully registered. Those registered are NARC Kenya, the National Vision Party, the Labour party of Kenya, the Grand National Union, United Democratic Forum and the Restore and Build Kenya Party.
