NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 15 – Education Permanent Secretary Professor James Ole Kiyiapi is set to resign from office on Monday morning to launch his presidential campaign.

Sources told Capital FM News that the PS was finally ready to quit public service and concentrate on positioning his bid to succeed President Mwai Kibaki in the next General Election.

“He will be resigning today at 10 am,” an official close to him told Capital FM News.

The 51-year-old professor will become the first public servant to resign from office to seek an elective post.

“This week will be my final moment in the civil service, I will be resigning to concentrate on my presidential campaign,” Kiyiapi said at a church service on Sunday.

Professor Kiyiapi announced his presidential candidature last year and pledged to resign from office in time to concentrate on his campaign.

“I made a pledge to Kenyans and I have to fulfill it. This is a firm commitment that I am in the presidential race, I will be going around the country to ask Kenyans to vote for me and together we will transform this country,” he said.

Prof Kiyiapi was first appointed PS in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources where he served until April 2008 when he was moved to the Medical Services Ministry and later Education.
