The accident occurred when a bus ferrying passengers to Kaloleni in Kilifi District lost control and landed in a ditch, according to police.
“Seven people have died, there are others have been rushed to hospital,” Coast Provincial Police Chief Aggrey Adoli told Capital FM News moments after the 8pm accident.
He said police were yet to establish the exact number of people admitted to hospitals after they were rushed there by good Samaritans.
Five of those taken to hospital are in a critical condition. The accident was a result of brake failure,” Adoli said.
Cases of road accidents on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway are common and police mainly blame them on poorly maintained public service vehicles and human error.
But police said the area where Sunday night’s accident occurred was not a black spot.
Some of the area marked as black spots on the highway include sections in Mtito Andei, Makindu and Voi.
Police say hardly a month goes by without a major accident reported in the three areas.
“These are extremely dangerous areas to drive and that is why we always tell road users to be careful at all times. We don’t want to continue losing our people,” Deputy Traffic Commandant Samuel Kimaru said.
