We are firmly in G7, Kalonzo men affirm/FILE

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 20 – The Wiper Democratic Party has insisted that it is firmly in the G7 alliance despite indication that party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was getting sidelined.

Deputy Party chairman David Musila said that Musyoka will not succumb to those pushing for his ouster from the political alliance.

Speaking after a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting, Musila said that the party had resolved that Musyoka would in future only attend rallies that have been cleared by a G7 committee that is headed by Cabinet Minister Njeru Githae.

“We have no reason to ask the party leader to pull out of these rallies because the principals concerned with G7 have shown interest to work together. The party has also instructed the party leader not to attend rallies not organised by the Githae-led committee,” said Musila.

The Mwingi South MP said that the purported divisive issues between Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Eldoret North MP William Ruto were sorted and the three agreed to still work together.

“These misunderstandings were ironed out to the extent that they agreed to work together, but we also understand that there are elements who want the VP to be sidelined and we are not going to succumb to those few,” Musila said.

Last Thursday, Musyoka’s fate in the G7 alliance appeared to hang in the balance, after he was excluded from a decisive meeting called to plan the political future of the grouping.

The meeting which was attended by Kenyatta, Ruto and 90 other Members of Parliament formed a committee to map out the future of the alliance that left out Kalonzo’s allies.

But the three top leaders held a surprise meeting on Friday night after which they dismissed talk of separation as “rumours.”

Musyoka has in recent weeks received a backlash over the stand taken by Justice Minister Mutula Kilonzo over the fate of the two (Kenyatta and Ruto), following their indictment by the International Criminal Court.

Justice Minister Mutula Kilonzo has maintained that Kenyatta must relinquishes his seat as DPM after he only quit as Finance Minister, and also that the two should put to shelf their presidential aspirations.

The MPs are further said to have been unhappy with Musyoka over pronouncements that were made in the Kamba language during a rally Machakos, although they did not immediately understand what was said.

The comments by Kangundo MP Johnson Muthama, a staunch Musyoka ally suggested that the VP stood to gain if Kenyatta and Ruto were committed to stand trial at The Hague.

Musila said that the party will have no role to play in the fate of Justice Minister Mutula Kilonzo saying it’s up to the president to decide on the sacking of the minister.

Mutula however did not attend the NEC as he was said to have been on official business.

“We have dealt with the issue of Mutula conclusively; we will not sit here and discus how someone will be sacked, it is the prerogative of the appointing authority. Whatever he said did not represent the position of the party or its leader,” he reiterated.

The MPs are also said to have demanded that Musyoka asks President Kibaki to sack the justice minister but the VP has denied writing to the president to take such action.
