NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 23 – Prime Minister Raila Odinga has asked Kenyans to honour the late Cabinet Minister John Michuki by planting at least one tree each on his burial date.
Speaking when he visited the late minister’s home in Ridgeways, Odinga said Michuki travelled the breadth and width of Kenya preaching conservation of the environment.
Odinga said planting of trees will be a befitting send-off for a man who had made great strides towards conservation of the environment.
“The least we can do in honour of John is to plant trees on the day of his burial. I have talked this with the family and they agree it would be a fitting honour,” the PM said.
The PM described Michuki as an untiring and fearless fighter saying the country has lost a great leader.
Odinga was accompanied by Immigration Minister Otieno Kajwang’, Regional Development Minister Fred Gumo and assistant Minister Alfred Khang’ati.
Former Minister Simeon Nyachae and former KANU nominated MP Ezekiel Barngetuny were also at the home.
Barngetuny described Michuki as a dedicated and sincere civil servant who faithfully served the country.
The Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi also sent condolences to the Michuki family saying the late minister was an institution to Kenyans and a model of efficiency in the management of public affairs.
He said that Michuki will be remembered for his commitment in achieving meaningful goals.
Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula said his departed Cabinet colleague would be remembered for his great dedication to duty and contribution to the making of the nation, both prior to and after the independence.
“It is my hope that his family will find peace and comfort in knowing that his efforts and contributions will never be forgotten, whenever the history of our great nation is recounted,” said Wetangula in a statement.
Elsewhere, businessmen from Murang’a also joined the rest of the country in paying tribute to the late Kangema MP.
Led by the chairman of the Rwathia business community John Muchiri, they described Michuki as a mentor for the role he played in helping them establish businesses in Nairobi.
“His death is a big blow and leaves a vacuum… we will never forget the valuable advice he gave. He accorded the founders of our many businesses in accessing business and property financing,” Muchiri said.
He said that the country as well as Kangema constituency was at a loss having lost its hardest working minister and MP.
“The country is poorer without him, we are aware that his hard work has greatly helped build the stature of our constituency nationally,” he said.
Muchiri described Michuki as a leader who was not self cantered but one who was attentive to concerns of the people.
They expressed optimism that the many projects Michuki had started in his constituency will be completed.
Michuki is set to be buried next Tuesday at his Kangema home.
