, NYAHURURU, Kenya, Jan 17 – The government has destroyed over 250 cartons of assorted brands of brews that claimed some 21 people in Nyandarua and Laikipia last year.

The illegal brew had been seized in different parts of the region and was lying at the Nyahururu police station awaiting laboratory results from the government chemist.

The destruction follows an order by a Nyahururu court that the brew be destroyed as it contained high levels of ethanol and was unfit for human consumption.

It took police officers the better part of Tuesday to destroy the consignment at Nyahururu municipality dumping site in an exercise which was highly guarded to prevent residents from taking advantage of the activity to consume the lethal brew.

Nyandarua police boss Simon Gababa Darso and Nyandarua public health officer George Onserio who led the exercise said that laboratory results had indicated that the brews contained high levels of ethanol which was dangerous for consumption.

He said that the illegal brews had been netted in stores within Nyahururu town, Ol-Kalou, Kinangop and other parts of Nyandarua county following the deaths of several people who consumed the liquor.

Among the brands destroyed were Yokozuna, Zest, Njamba and Trigger, Pembe among other brews.

The police chief warned that the government would not relent on its war against the sale and consumption of illegal brews in the area.

Darso called on the public to be cautious of such illicit brews which he termed as dangerous noting that most of them had high levels of methanol which is poisonous.

He said that several people had been arraigned in court for violating the act and the police had been deployed in various parts of Nyandarua to wipe out the vice.

On his part, the area district public health officer said his ministry was carrying out health education among the local communities to sensitize them on the dangers of such brews adding that this will continue to ensure such drinks are eradicated.

During the last year incident, some 21 people died in the region after consuming the brew which also left three others blind.
