Gbagbo’s doctor still detained despite court order

ABIDJAN, Jan 4 – The personal physician of ousted Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo remains in detention Wednesday even though a court has granted him bail, one of his lawyers said.
“Doctor Christophe Ble remains in detention” in northern Ivory Coast’s Korhogo region, Herve Gouamene told AFP, accusing a local military commander of failing to release the physician.
Martin Fofie Kouakou, who heads ground troops in Korhogo, “opposes the implementation of the decree” ordering Ble’s release, the lawyer said.
The military chief said he was waiting for his superiors’ orders before implementing the decree, added Gouamene.
A judicial official told AFP a week ago that all procedures had been completed for Ble’s release.
AFP was unable to obtain any official reaction from Fofie on Wednesday.
On December 30, the court freed on bail Ble and two journalists detained during the country’s post-election unrest in 2011.
The physician was detained along with Gbagbo in Korhogo after the former strongman’s arrest on April 11, marking the end of post-election violence which left 3,000 people dead.
Gbagbo was transferred on November 30 to the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where he is being charged for crimes against humanity.
Pro-Gbagbo lawyers are seeking the release of 17 other people, including the former first lady Simone Gbagbo.
