NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 25– Five people died while 11 others were seriously injured in a grisly road accident after two buses collided head on along the Nairobi- Mombasa highway.
Deputy Traffic Commandant Samuel Kimaru has told Capital News that the accident occurred at around 2.30 a.m.
“Two buses from the Coast bus company were headed to Mombasa while another bus from Mashlah company was headed to Nairobi,” Kimaru said.
He explained that the two Coast buses were following each other when the first one attempted to overtake. The second bus followed without knowing there was an oncoming vehicle and that is when the accident happened.
“The two drivers died on the spot,” he said adding that the injured were rushed to Voi District Hospital.
The accident happened at Kanga area which is between Mtito-Andei and Voi.
“We urge all drivers to take precaution especially when travelling at night,” the Deputy Traffic Commandant appealed.
He also called on Kenyans to avoid travelling at night terming it a risky venture because of poor visibility.
“We also know with the festivities there are people who will want to drink and drive but I urge them not to,” he added.
