NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 26 – A woman and her four children died after she set their house on fire in Homa Bay on Friday morning.
According to police, the incident occurred at 5am at a rented house in Rodi Kopany, Homa Bay district.
Witnesses told police they saw smoke billowing from the rented house and they were unable to put it out.
Homa Bay police chief Francis Kumut said they were informed that the deceased woman had an argument with her former husband after which she retreated to her rented house in the town.
“We have recorded statements from several people. Her former husband will also record a statement with us because we are told they quarrelled last [Thursday] night,” Mr Kumut said. “We want to know what exactly happened.”
The 33-year-old woman is reported to have been furious with the man whom she accused of abandoning her to marry another woman.
“We will have to get to the bottom of this matter, once statements are recorded from all the witnesses and the deceased husband, I am sure we will have something substantive,” the police chief said.
Charred remains of the children aged 12, 6 and twins aged 4 years were taken to the Homa Bay district hospital mortuary.
