Aug 31 declared Idd holiday

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 19 – The government has declared Wednesday, August 31 a public holiday to mark Idd-Ul-Fitr.

The announcement is contained in a gazette notice issued by Head of the Civil Service Ambassador Francis Muthaura which is dated August 10.

“It is notified for general information that Wednesday, 31st August, 2011, will be observed as a public holiday to mark Idd-Ul-Fitr day,” the brief gazette notice states.

Idd-ul-Fitr often abbreviated to Idd is a holiday that marks the end of the holy Islamic month of fasting known as Ramadhan.

The holiday celebrates the conclusion of the thirty days of dawn-to-sunset fasting observed during the entire month.
