, NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 26 – The Nairobi Chief Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday ordered for the arrest of Garsen MP Danson Mungatana for allegedly issuing six bouncing cheques to a real estate agency.
Chief Magistrate Gilbert Mutembei issued the arrest order after the State filed the case in which the MP is accused of issuing the cheques on his account at Equatorial Bank, Nyerere Branch when he knew that it had insufficient funds.
The MP had allegedly issued five different cheques each bearing Sh900,000 on March 9 this year. On the same day he issued another cheques of Sh975,600 all of which amounted to Sh5,475,000.
Mr Mutembei has now directed that the case be mentioned on August 12 when the MP may be brought before the court.
Mr Mungatana is the National Secretary General of Narc Kenya. He first got elected in 2002 on a Narc ticket.
Since his election, he has served in government as an Assistant Minister in the Office of the Vice President and Ministry of Reconstruction (2003), Assistant Minister, Ministry of Regional Development (2003), Assistant Minister, Office of the President in Charge of Provincial Administration (2004), Assistant Minister, Ministry of Lands & Housing (2005), Assistant Minister, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2006), Assistant Minister, Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs (2006-2008), Assistant Minister, Ministry of Medical Services (2008 – April, 2009).
He resigned from government in April 2009 as an Assistant Minister, Ministry of Medical Services after claiming that the Grand Coalition Government was not interested in reforms and was riddled with corruption scandals. He joined the Party National Chairperson Martha Karua who resigned as Minister for Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs to press for reforms in Kenya Government.
He has been an active Member of Parliament and one of the leaders of the Opposition caucus. He serves in Parliamentary Committees of Budget and National Security.
