Zimbabwe meets Mozambican president

MAPUTO, Mar 16 – Zimbabwe\’s Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on Tuesday met with Mozambican President Armando Guebuza to discuss problems in his unity government with President Robert Mugabe.

"There are a few problems developing in terms of cohesion," Tsvangirai told reporters after the brief meeting the evening in the Mozambican capital Maputo.

"We are hoping the troika, which President Guebuza is leading, should be fully briefed," he said, referring to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Troika on Politics, Defence and Security.

The regional body should be involved in setting a "roadmap" for elections, Tsvangirai reiterated.

Mugabe and Tsvangirai formed a unity government two years ago under a SADC-backed Global Political Agreement that was meant to end political violence and to ensure basic rights such as freedom of speech and assembly.

However, Tsvangirai last week called for a "divorce" from the inclusive government after Energy Minister Elton Mangoma was charged with abuse of office over a fuel purchase, while the Supreme Court nullified the election of his party\’s chairman as parliamentary speaker.

Mugabe, who has ruled since independence from Britain in 1980, said last month that the polls should be held as soon as possible.

Tsvangirai had previously insisted that polls be held only once a new constitution was in place to guarantee political freedoms suppressed during Mugabe\’s three decades in power.

"The question is that everyone in an inclusive government implements their side of the bargain," he said in Maputo.
