HARARE, Mar 28 – Police on Sunday barred Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai\’s party from holding a rally, saying it coincided with the funeral of a close ally of President Robert Mugabe, an official said.
"They (police) wrote to us saying we could not proceed with the rally because it was coinciding with the burial of Harare governor David Karimanzira," said Nelson Chamisa, party spokesman for the Movement for Democratic Change.
"We know they are clutching at straws and they would soon run out of excuses. … We should be able to proceed with our rally next weekend," he added.
Karimanzira, who died Thursday, was declared a national hero and was buried in the capital Harare.
Police have banned several other planned MDC rallies this year saying they either clashed with Mugabe\’s ZANU-PF party or that they did not have enough manpower to monitor the events.
