UN says 173 killed in Ivory Coast chaos

GENEVA, Dec 23 – UN staff have substantiated allegations of 173 killings and 90 cases of torture or ill treatment in Ivory Coast after December 16, UN deputy human rights chief Kyung-wha Kang said on Thursday.

"Between 16 and 21 December, human rights officers have substantiated allegations of 173 killings, 90 instances of torture and ill treatment, 471 arrests and detentions and 24 cases of enforced or involuntary disappearances," Kang told a special session of the UN Human Rights Council.

"Unfortunately it has been impossible to investigate all the allegations of serious human rights violations, including reports of mass graves, due to restrictions on movement by UN personnel," she added during the meeting to discuss the post-election crisis in west African country.
