Prince William proposed at Kenya reserve

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 17 – Britain\’s Prince William may have chosen to propose to his long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton at a top Kenyan game reserve famous for saving endangered black rhinos, where he was seen last month.

Clarence House, the official residence of Prince Charles and his sons William and Harry, announced Tuesday that the couple became engaged in Kenya in October.

A visitor to the remote Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in central Kenya told AFP on condition of anonymity they had seen the 28-year-old prince, the second in line to the British throne, at the reserve on October 19.

Lewa, 225 kilometres (140 miles) north of the capital Nairobi, has made headlines for its work with black rhinos, threatened by poachers, and allows visitors to track lions and view big cats, elephants and other animals.

William reportedly spent three months after leaving secondary school living with the family of the founder of the 24,000-hectare (60,000-acre) Lewa conservancy, Ian Craig.

The reserve\’s rhino conservationists also work at the nearby 36,000-hectare Ol Pejeta reserve, home to Kenya\’s largest single population of black rhinos.

Lewa, created in 1995, supports over 440 species of birds and more than 70 different mammals, according to its website.

"Its rhino population has grown steadily, not only restoring local numbers but enabling black rhino reintroduction in regions where they long had been absent," it says.

Other activities at the reserve include fly-fishing, flights in a small aircraft around the conservation areas of northern Kenya, walks in the bush and Masai dance performances around a bonfire in the evening.
