8 killed in Isiolo road crash

\"\"ISIOLO, Kenya, Nov 4 – Eight people were killed and 40 others seriously wounded following a road accident that occurred near Isiolo town on Wednesday night.

The accident occurred when a lorry carrying 50 passengers lost control and overturned at Merit, 50 kilometers from Isiolo town, Kenya Red Cross Society officials said.

“Seven of them lost their lives on the spot while the other one succumbed to injuries while being taken to hospital,” the society’s Communications Manager Titus Mung’ou said.

“It overturned while climbing a hill and rolled several times before it landed in a ditch,” he added. Those injured were taken to the Isiolo district hospital.

This is the latest of a series of fatal road accidents that have occurded in the country lately.

On Monday, five people were killed when a bus ferrying passengers to Garissa overturned near Mwingi town.

Meanwhile, rescuers have pulled out two bodies out of the seven who drowned when a boat capsized in Lake Victoria on Monday evening.

The rescuers from the Kenya Navy arrived at the lake shore late Wednesday and were spearheading the operation on Thursday, the Kenya Red Cross said.

“The two bodies were pulled out this morning, the search for more bodies is still going on,” Mr Mung’ou said.

“Our volunteers are also helping in the identification of the recovered bodies,” he added.

Five more bodies are still under water between Mbasa and Takawiri Island, some six kilometers from Mbita beach.

In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross said their volunteers are providing psychological counseling to affected families who have pitched camp at Sienga beach.

“KRCS Homa Bay Branch has also provided non-food items to the family members affected by the tragedy, who are camping at the beach,” he added.

Up to ten people are reported missing following the tragedy which occurred when a boat carrying mourners capsized on Monday evening.
