DAR ES SALAAM, Nov 5 – Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete appears to be cruising for re-election according to partial results, with final results expected Friday, the electoral commission said.
Results from last weekend\’s polls released late Thursday showed Kikwete leading in 192 out of 225 constituencies announced. Tanzania has 239 constituencies.
The results have been slow in coming, sparking protests in some Dar es Salaam districts and leading security forces to disperse angry crowds with tear gas.
On Wednesday, a Tanzanian opposition leader demanded that the electoral commission stop releasing more presidential results, saying they were erroneous.
Voters in Sunday\’s general elections held in the east African nation and its semi-autonomous island of Zanzibar also chose lawmakers and local leaders.
While Tanzania is one of the world\’s poorest countries, it has been spared the political turmoil that has plagued its neighbours.
