Kenya nabs SA teen with heroin

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 23 – A 17-year-old South African girl has been arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) while allegedly trafficking heroin worth Sh1 million, police said.

The girl was arrested at about 7.30 pm on Thursday night at the screening point moments after she landed from Dubai.

“When her luggage was screened, we detected the drugs which were concealed in her bag, she was carrying about one and half kilograms of heroin,” Airport CID chief Joseph Ngisa said.

Her passport showed the girl was traveling from India through Dubai and was headed to Lilongwe, Malawi. She was traveling alone.

“We are equally surprised that such a young girl can traffic drugs,” Mr Ngisa said and added that the girl “will be arraigned in court once an investigation is completed. We should be through by Monday; that is the earliest you can expect her in court.”

Cases of drug trafficking have been on the increase in the country, with at least three people arrested while traveling through the Jomo Kenyatta International Aiport every month.
