Former presidential candidate nabbed

CARACAS, Jul 13 – A Venezuelan former presidential candidate was arrested Monday in Caracas on explosives-related charges, authorities said.

Opposition politician Alejandro Pena Esclusa was detained at his home where authorities located "evidence apparently of an explosive nature," National Intelligence director David Colmenares told VTV state television.

Colmenares said the search of Pena Esclusa\’s home was part of the follow-up to the investigation into Salvadoran terror suspect Francisco Chavez Abarca.

Chavez Abarca was arrested in Caracas and extradited earlier this month to Cuba where he was sought in connection with a series of bombings on Havana hotels in 1997.

The Salvadoran is also accused of planning several terrorist attacks ahead of Venezuela\’s legislative elections in September, as well as possibly planning to assassinate President Hugo Chavez.
