Kenyan leaders commit to safeguard peace

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 26 – President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have reaffirmed the government’s commitment to serve Kenyans and uplift their living standards despite the differences of opinions of the leaders in the Grand Coalition.

In a joint statement to mark the second anniversary since the signing of the National Accord, the President and the Prime Minister assured Kenyans that they will do everything within their powers to safeguard peace in the country.

“We recognise that coalition governments, world over, by their own nature, present many challenges. However despite the differences of opinion that are likely to arise from time to time, the Grand Coalition is fully committed to serving Kenyans and improving their living conditions,” the statement said.

The President and the Prime Minister said the day the National accord was signed marked a turning point in the country’s history.

The two leaders observed that the coalition government has put in place a broad national reform policy agenda that would ensure entrenchment of the culture of democracy, rule of law and development in the country.

The Principals noted with appreciation that the journey to the new constitution dispensation was firmly on course.

In this regard, the President and the Prime Minister called upon Parliament to deliberate on the draft constitution and avail a document that will be supported by the vast majority of Kenyans during the forthcoming referendum.

The two leaders dedicated February 28 as a day of National Unity and thanksgiving and asked Kenyans to pray for the country on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in their respective places of worship.

The Principals thanked Kenyans for their support, resilience and determination to co-exist peacefully after the signing of the National Accord.
