Peeping Tom gets two months in Kenyan jail

NYAHURURU, Kenya, Jan 25 – A 46-year-old mason was on Monday jailed for two months or a fine of Sh5,000 by a Nyahururu court for peeping at a bathing woman.

Nyahururu Resident Magistrate Caroline Obara heard that the woman nearly collapsed in the bathroom on seeing the dreadlocked man.

The prosecution led by Inspector Paul Omweri told the court that on December 29 last year, Peter Mugo Nyaga was following the woman wherever she went and kept on calling her his wife.

The 23-year-old woman (name withheld), then decided to go to the bathroom when the accused gave her a “break”, only to return after the lady had undressed, and he started peeping through the gaps on the timber door of the bathroom.

The woman screamed and Mr Mugo took off. He later went back armed with a panga and continued to harass the complainant. Luckily for the woman police officers on patrol in the estate came by and she reported the matter to them.

The father of two was arrested and taken to Oljoro Orok police station where he was charged with the offence.

The accused appeared before court on Friday and charged with insulting the modesty of a woman and intruding her privacy, but the prosecution then decided to amend the charge to read “creating disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace”.

In mitigation, the accused said he had no intention of harming the woman with the panga. He pleaded for leniency saying that he had sheep and goats that needed his attention hence he should not be jailed.
