Two killed in Kisii building collapse

KISUMU, Kenya, Jun 6 – Two people were killed after an unfinished building in Kisii town collapsed on Saturday afternoon.

Nyanza Deputy Police Chief Larry Kieng said it was unclear how many people were in the four storey structure when it tumbled at 2pm.

By sunset, five people had been rescued from the rubble.

They were treated at the Kisii District Hospital and discharged.

Rescue efforts continued into Saturday evening. Most of those trapped were believed to be construction workers.

Provincial Police Operations Officer Francis Lemangi led the rescue mission.

Mr Kieng said the Provincial Works Engineer had been informed of the incident and was expected at the site.

He was to access the damage from the cave in whose cause is yet to be established.

Nairobi Blast

In Nairobi, another man died after an explosive was set off at a quarry in Kasarani.

Two others were injured by the afternoon blast.

Police said the explosive was being used at the quarry site.
