Man charged with raping sick woman

NYAHURURU, Kenya, Jun 12 – A casual labourer has been arraigned before a Nyahururu court and charged with raping a mentally retarded woman in Subukia.

Appearing before Acting Principal Magistrate Teresiah Matheka on Friday, Simon Gichure Muchoki denied committing the offence at the woman’s parent’s home in Nakuru North District.

The court heard that on June 7 this year the accused raped the woman at Nguva farm.

Mr Gichure wept uncontrollably when the charges were read out to him and pleaded that he be released on bond, pending the hearing and determination of the case.

“I am the sole bread winner in my family. I have six children and am taking care of two of my sister’s orphans,” he pleaded.

Inspector Frederick Makabila did not oppose the bond request saying he had not been given any instructions regarding the matter.

The magistrate ordered that the case be heard on June 24.

Medical reports for the accused and the complainant have since been prepared and will be produced during the hearing of the case.

Elsewhere, Police in Siaya district are holding a 47-year-old woman who allegedly hacked her husband to death on Thursday night.

Nyanza police Chief Anthony Kibuchi told the media that the deceased had a quarrel with his second wife which degenerated into a fight.

Mr Kibuchi alleged that the suspect then picked a machete and struck her husband on the head.

The man died after bleeding profusely as no attempts were made to rush him to hospital.

“We have arrested the woman who is assisting with investigations before we bring her to court,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Form Four student at Mbita High School in Suba district committed suicide on Thursday.

Mr Kibuchi said that the student had been sent home because he had no school fees.

“His body was found hanging from a tree with a suicide noted indicating he has opted to take his life due to frustrations with his education,” the police chief said.
