Police seize Sh8m bhang haul in Mombasa

MOMBASA, Kenya, Mar 30 – Police in Mombasa have arrested a suspect with a bhang haul valued at Sh8 million.

The arrest was made as authorities in the town stepped up their fight against illegal drug trafficking.

Coast Provincial Commissioner Mr Ernest Munyi said that the man had transported the bhang in a tinted four wheel drive vehicle all the way from Migori and was destined to Barsheba area in Kisauni constituency.

The man who seemed well connected had his two cell phones confiscated after he allegedly engaged a senior police officer in a long telephone conversation.

The man when interviewed by the police said there was a dispute over how to share a commission of Sh200,000 among the involved parties and said it was a deal gone sour.

"How could I have managed to evade all the police blocks from Migori to Mombasa if it was not an inside job", asked the detained suspect.

Mr Munyi said the government would not relent in its war against drug abuse and urged the public to work closely with the police to curb the vice.

He said Kisauni was a hub of drug trafficking and added that the war has been spread all over the region.
