Former Guinean PM arrested

CONAKRY, Mar 24 – Guinea’s former Prime Minister Ahmed Tidiane Souare and two former mining ministers have been arrested, their families told AFP.

Souare, who was also mining minister in 2005-2006, was arrested on Monday at his home, as were former mining ministers Ousmane Sylla and Lounceny Nabe.

No reasons were provided for the arrest of the three men, who were taken to a police garrison.

The arrests come three months following the military putsch on December 23 hours after the death was announced of President Lansana Conte, who was in power from 1984 to 2008.

Souare was the last prime minister under Conte’s regime.

Since taking power the junta has arrested a number of people linked with Conte’s regime, including senior police officials and Conte’s son, who was shown on national television admitting to trafficking drugs.
