NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 6 – AFC Leopards will mark their return to top flight Kenyan club football when they travel to Hope Centre to face Nairobi City Stars on Sunday.
Leopards will be yearning for an impressive performance against the Kawangware based side who have signed 11 new players and also have German tactician Oliver Page overseeing their 2009 campaign.
His opposite number Gilbert Selebwa has the ardous task of returning ‘Ingwe’ to the glory days and will be relying on a squad made up of new and experienced players that will be captained by Francis Xavier.
Another newly promoted side Sofapaka will have to wait until next weekend to get their season up and running after their match with Tusker FC was postponed following the death of Tusker CEO and former Harambee Stars team manager Peter Serry in last week’s Nakumatt Downtown inferno.
All matches this weekend will start with a minute’s silence and players will wear black armbands in Serry’s honour.
Gor Mahia will lock horns with Ulinzi at Greensteads on Saturday as they seek to banish memories of their 5-0 to another army side APR of Rwanda in the Champions League on Sunday.
That loss has raised doubts over ‘K’ogallo’s’ readiness for the league but veteran coach James Siang’a would have been working on the deficiencies his team showed on the continental stage before Saturday’s match.
Francis Kimanzi’s Mathare United are another side who need a confidence booster after they lost their Champions League match 2-0 to Zambian outfit Zesco United.
The defending KPL champions launch the defence of their title against Naivasha based club Sher Karuturi at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
In other matches, Chemelil Sugar will entertain Western Stima, Bandari travel to Thika United, Sony Sugar will host Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) at Awendo and Agrochemicals lock horns with Red Berets at Muhoroni.
