Obama brother held briefly over bhang

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 31 – US president Barack Obama’s half-brother who lives in Huruma was briefly arrested then released for being in possession of two rolls of bhang (cannabis), according to police sources.

A senior officer at the Kasarani Police Station said on Saturday that George Hussein was arrested late on Friday with the bhang. He was released on Saturday evening with no charges preferred against him.

The officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said; "he was picked up in Nairobi‘s Huruma area with three other young men."

He added that they were due to appear in court on Monday, but it is now unclear whether they will be arraigned in court.

George Obama was one of the few close relatives who did not attend the president’s January 20 inauguration ceremony in Washington, and in his memoir, the new leader describes meeting his half brother as ‘a painful affair’.

George, who works as an apprentice mechanic, is the last of the late Barack Obama Snr’s eight children by four mothers.

He has only met his half-brother twice and recently said that he was not invited to President Obama’s inauguration in Washington DC but would have really liked to go.

"I’m still very proud of him," George had told journalists at the time.
