Suspects escape from police cells

NYAHURURU, Kenya, Dec 18 – Police are looking for seven suspects who made a dramatic escape from the Rumuruti police station on Wednesday night.

The suspects are said to have pretended that one of their colleagues had fallen ill, prompting policemen to open the cell door, after which they made a hasty get away.

Area OCPD Paul Kariuki confirmed the incident on Thursday and said the suspects were being held for various offences, ranging from violent robberies to stealing stock.

“The suspects outshined the two officers on duty by jumping out of the cells and escaping using different routes,” he explained. “They pretended that one of their fellow inmates was ill and asked that he be taken for a medical check up at the Rumuruti dispensary.”

Mr Kariuki said that he had just gotten into his house at around 7:30pm on Wednesday when he heard gunshots coming from the police station, and rushed to find out what was happening.

“The two officers are being questioned over the incident,” the OCPD stated, adding that the suspects might have planned their escape since they dashed out the instant the cell door was opened.

Mr Kariuki has now appealed to residents in the area to aid police with information should they spot the suspects, whom he described as ‘known criminals’.

In a separate incident, 40 people are nursing injuries after they were attacked by a group of youth at the Muguongo and Gatami villages in Rumuruti division, for allegedly failing to attend a security meeting called by village elders.

Laikipia West Administration Police Commandant Joseph Ng’ang’a said three people were admitted to the Nyahururu District Hospital with serious injuries sustained during the beating on Wednesday evening.
