Kibaki in talks with Obasanjo

NAIROBI, November 18 – President Mwai Kibaki on Monday held talks with the United Nations Special Envoy to the current crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo Olusegun Obasanjo at State House Nairobi.

During the talks Mr Obasanjo briefed President Kibaki, on the progress of the ongoing peace initiative to resolve the conflict in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after meeting the key parties to the dispute in Kinshasa, Kigali, Goma and Luanda.

The two leaders appealed to the disputants to uphold the negotiated ceasefire and urged them to open a humanitarian corridor to allow unhindered flow of assistance to displaced victims of the conflict.

President Kibaki who is the Chair of Great Lakes Regional Peace Initiative noted that there was need to sustain the high momentum of resolving the conflict and upholding of all other peace accords that have been signed previously until lasting peace is achieved.

The Head of State appealed to the combatants to give dialogue and the ongoing peace talks a chance noting that nonviolent settlement of disputes remains the most viable option of resolving contentious issues.

The talks, which were also attended by former Tanzanian President Benjamin Mkapa who together with Mr Obasanjo are the lead facilitators of the peace initiative, noted there was urgent need to stop further human suffering and loss of innocent lives.

The leaders underscored the need for aid workers to be granted unhindered access to the tens-of-thousands of people who have been displaced by the violence.
