Kibaki commends ICRC

NAIROBI, October 16 – President Mwai Kibaki has commended the Kenya Red Cross Society for working closely with the Government in resettling the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

Speaking when he met the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (ICRC) Secretary-General Mr Bekele Geleta at his Harambee House Office on Thursday, President Kibaki said the Kenya Red Cross Society has continued to play a leading role in ensuring that the IDPs resume normal life after the post election challenges.

The President cited the rehabilitation of schools, construction of houses and provision of relief food as some of the ongoing efforts by the humanitarian organisation that has gone a long way towards addressing the plight of the IDPs.

He observed that following the partnership between the Government and the Kenya Red Cross Society, majority of the IDPs have been resettled.

On his part, Mr Geleta appreciated the Government’s and President Kibaki’s personal support to the ICRC in its efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need not only in the country but also in the region.

He also thanked Kenya for hosting the regional office of International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and also for agreeing to host in Nairobi the ICRC General Assembly meeting which will be held for the first time in an African country next year.

Kenya is the first country Mr Geleta is visiting since his appointment to the position of Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent societies.
